Refuge Mektub

formerly Morocco Animal Aid | Agadir, Morocco

Who They Are

Refuge Mektub, formerly Morocco Animal Aid, has been helping street animals in Morocco since 2015. What started as a group of volunteers caring for street dogs in Taghazout has grown into a registered French charity running shelters in both Morocco and France. They rescue and rehabilitate animals, run adoption and foster programs through their Golden Ticket initiative, and care for over 600 animals at any given time. They have a documentary, a shop, flight volunteer and sponsorship programs, and one of the most active animal welfare communities in Morocco, with over 50,000 followers on Instagram.

Beyond the rescue work, Refuge Mektub is one of the organizations actively speaking out against the violence toward street animals in Morocco. They use their platform to raise awareness and advocate for humane alternatives at a time when street animals are routinely targeted and killed.

  • How Your Donation Helps

    Donate Now

Mektub cares for hundreds of animals at any given time. Some are there for days. Some for years. All of them need food, shelter, vaccinations, and flea and tick treatment at minimum. Many need ongoing medication, vet care, behavioral support, or mobility aids like wheelchairs.

None of it is funded by the government. It all comes from donors.

    Here's what your contribution covers:

    • 5€ = hay stack

    • 10€ = puppy vaccination

    • 20€ = bag of dog food

    • 50€ = full vaccination

    • 70€ = cat sterilization

    • 110€ = dog sterilization

    • 200€ = titer blood test

    • 330€ = food for 500+ animals for one day

  • Sponsor an Animal

You can sponsor one animal or as many as you like. Every sponsorship frees up funds for more rescues, vet bills, and community sterilization projects. There are options for every budget.

As a sponsor, you'll get a quarterly update on your chosen animal so you can see exactly what your support is doing.

Give them a second chance. Sponsor here.

  • Volunteer With Mektub

The animals at Mektub are their patients. The work is physical, dirty, noisy, and sometimes overwhelming. It is also completely worth it.

Mektub runs entirely on volunteers from around the world. Without them, the shelter doesn't run. Volunteer schedules vary week to week, and the team works hard to stay covered no matter what. If you join, you're expected to give 100%. That's not a disclaimer. That's just what the animals need.

If you believe in what they're building and want to be part of it, they want to hear from you.

  • Foster an Animal

Fostering is for people who have love to give but can't commit to a permanent pet. When you foster, you take one of Mektub's animals into your home temporarily, care for them until they're ready to be adopted or returned to the shelter, and free up space for animals who are sick, injured, or vulnerable.

It's one of the most direct ways to help.
